Hola et bonjour - so sorry to hear of your loss- the election is why I planned to get Canadian citizenship in 2017 I have 57 days to go to file. Thrilled about the studio and once I am set and filed I will most definitely come to say hi to you in Montpellier !! The last time we saw each other was outside the Trader Joe’s on Santa Monica Blvd in Weho - so it has been a spell…

I am grateful for all of you who share their “I quit my life and moved to Xyz” experiences. I marvel at your gumption and willingness to build a new life. I appreciate having a chance to vicariously experience the highs and lows of trying to establish a new community. I marvel at the writing skill you bring to these stories. And I sympathize with the losses you experience along the way. Losing a pet is always hard, and in your case, it seems that you have also lost a partner in this adventure.

I am so sorry about your dog—it’s the worst way to lose a pet, like they have been taken from you.

Dear Carolyn, thank you for sharing. I'm so very sorry to learn about Ru. It's so painful to lose a beloved companion. Thank you also for sharing your photos of Montpellier and the loft - congratulations on that. It is indeed nice to have some distraction when so much seems so bleak. I'm grateful for my husband for the same reason you wrote. If it weren't for him... Bonnes sejours a vous deux. Merci encore.

How brilliant to buy that little studio — just very smart and it will pay such dividends both monetary and other! I have friends in NYC who did this, bought a tiny place that shared a wall with the apartment where they already lived. It was a huge benefit for them and I hope it will be the same for you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine what I would do right now without my animal family. It's all I do is pour myself into the garden and the animals. Thank you for the update and I'm glad you have the house to keep you in your creative (and out of the analytical) brains. There is no sense to be made of either tragedy. Just loss. Sending love from Austin.

It's really nice of you to write, Jennifer. I was thinking of you last week because I was thinking about pets and people I know who are similarly devoted. In your case that care extends to not only your pets, but your plants, and all the living things around you - so, of course you popped into my head quickly as I thought about those things.

Grateful for my fantastic wife and your friend Kara. For my fabulous friends - near and far. My students who are opening The Outsiders this Friday. Stay gold! My stomach that’s suffering from some sort of food poisoning/stomach flu but holding on cuz I can’t be absent on the last week of dress/tech! And for my puppies - as we know too well, they’re lives are brief and fragile.

My heart breaks for the loss of your dog - losing a pet is so hard, and in this way is tragic, and one of my greatest fears for my dog. I do love reading your substack and living vicariously through your adventures. I just had a baby 3 months ago and I am grateful that she had her first 7.5 hour stretch of sleep last week, because the sleep deprivation we've experienced is brutal and this is a much needed glimmer of hope.

Very sorry about the loss of of your pup, Ru, losing a pet is so hard.

You asked about what we are thankful for so here it goes:

I am grateful for airplanes and crew that take my husband and myself back to the US to visit our children and many grandchildren. I am grateful for the technology that allows me to communicate via call, text and video with those I love who are far away, and finally I’m thankful to those in France who looked at my passport and decided I was a candidate to live here, I am truly grateful.

Roberto and Carolyn I am so sorry for your loss. The love and physical contact with pets is something I’m always grateful for. While grief is not something I would say I’m grateful for, it is the result of having love and being loved which I have endless gratitude.

On a lighter note I’m grateful for sleep when I can get it. I wish I was as productive as Roberto when I’m unable to go back to sleep in the wee hours of the morning but it does allow for quiet reflection but I’d rather be asleep.

Love to you both 💞
