We applied for our one year resident visas last week in Houston. We handed in the stacks of paper along with our passports and friends, we were only missing one thing!
Among the requirements for a French visa is the need to prove you have emergency medical insurance. I had bought the policy, but my confirmation letter only had my name on it, not Roberto’s. It took some time to reach the insurance company on the phone and get them to email me what I needed, but the woman at the visa center was super patient and gave us all the time we needed. We had the same woman last year, and she remembered us! A good reminder that staying pleasant under stress ultimately pays off (I’m looking at you, JD Vance).
If I had not been missing that one item, I think the entire appointment would have taken 20 minutes. Progress! Next year we should have it down to a science.*
Now we just have to wait and see. The French Embassy in D.C. will mail us back the passports, hopefully with the new visas glued inside.
Due to the time in Houston, a book deadline, and a band gig, I haven’t had the time to write an in-depth post for today. Don’t faint in disappointment!
I am leaving you with two videos. First is the trailer for The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. If you’ve ever wondered why Catherine Deneuve is such a big deal, watch this film. She is twenty and seems to be lit from within. And the color composition! “In every shot the chromatic of the clothes is matched with the decor and even the locations, sometimes reminding of a colourful French macarons store.”
And here is a taste of my band performing yesterday. As regular readers know, this is the thing I miss the most when we are in France - writing and playing original music with these amazing women.
Jusqu’à la prochaine fois
Carolyn
* The French will definitely change up the application process as soon as we know what we are doing.
